It’s finally happened: Clutch have returned with new music. After years of teasing a follow-up to 2022’s Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, the Maryland groove kings have hit back with their first new song in nearly four years. The comeback cut has been given the on-the-nose title of “The Drifter Returns.” Clutch get punchy from the jump, leaning into a percussive give-and-take between thick-and-meaty pull-off riffs and Neal Fallon’s gruffly melodic witticisms on faith, “ontological shock treatment” and living for the moment (“Today is all we’ve got / I speak the truth, why would I lie?”). As previously reported, Clutch have been grinding their gears on new music for a few years. Fallon had previously confirmed with Metal Hammer last December that the band had logged a few songwriting sessions in 2025, and that they’d be recording sometime in 2026. It’s as-yet unclear if the band have completed the full-length, or when exactly “The Drifter Returns” was record (or by whom). Nevertheless, Clutch have at least thrown themselves into first gear for their next phase. You can sample the action via the lyric video up above. Clutch are due to start a 17-show headline tour October 16th at the Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina. They’ll be joined by support acts Slomosa and Blood Vulture. Fallon appear on the album’s final track, “The Three Fates.” He’d previously tracked a legendary guest spot on Mastodon’s “Blood and Thunder” song from 2004 LP Leviathan.
