DEAFHEAVEN launch surprise EP with ruthless new song “Hunter”Deafheaven are back and heavier than ever. Today (October 9th), the beloved blackgaze outfit surprise-released an explosive three-song EP for the faithful: At Work in the Fields of the Bomb. The whole thing is on streamers now, while the band are also flexing a fascinatingly arty music video for lead-off cut “Hunter,” which was co-conceived by vocalist George Clarke. “Hunter” batters out the gates with bleak, synth-assisted black-metal bombast, Clarke lunging into a series of echoed-but-intense screeches as the band ebb-and-flow between moments both grooved and blasted. The song is on the darker side of Deafheaven’s spectrum — no upliftingly melodic reprieves to speak of, really. Raw, uncaged, steely-eyed stuff. A press release explains that the EP, on the whole, is themed around “the ordinary places and people involved in the production of nuclear weapons,” providing an “unsettling contrast between the unimaginable consequences of the bomb and the mundane actions that make such destruction possible.” Much like political theories around “the banality of evil,” the EP apparently ponders “how catastrophe can emerge from seemingly ordinary details — and how, once extinction becomes possible, there is ultimately no one left to witness it.” A music video pairs those dark thoughts and intense sounds with an oddly tender, yet ominous interpretive dance between one person and a trio of nylon-masked antagonists (all of whom are also integrated into the EP cover art). While graceful, their movements include mock gun blasts and a brief push-pit. You can see the video in full up above. At Work in the Fields of the Bomb was recorded with producer Arthur Rizk, and also includes the more ambient “Three Princes” and the nearly 13-minute “Sorry Laid the Hearth” — the latter of which ending on an exquisitely punishing extended mosh riff. The EP follows last year’s aching Lonely People With Power. An exclusive color vinyl pressing of the EP (limited to 500 copies) is up for pre-order in Revolver‘s shop, where you can also pick up other titles from Deafheaven’s towering discography. As previously reported, Deafheaven are currently out on the road with Mastodon and Alcest, and they perform tonight at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California.
