Metal Health at its best, a hospitalized heavy music fan recently experienced a private performance from Canadian power metal band the Scepter. As CTV News reports, the group recently appeared at Ottawa, Ontario’s Bruyère Health facility to perform for 27-year-old patient Tom Berry, who is described as being “medically unable to go to a concert.” Berry had asked officials at the hospital if he could experience a show, and they were glad to be able to provide. “It’s not unusual for us to think outside the box, but heavy metal was never on my playbook when I started here,” Bruyère Health clinical chaplain Roshene Lawson told CTV News. Employees at the nearby Dominion Tavern contacted the Scepter, a local band that began performing in 2018 and released debut album Shadows in the Tower earlier this month. The club owners brought lights and sound gear inside Bruyère Health. To not disturb other patients on his floor, Berry’s bed was moved from his room into a nearby boardroom, where the Scepter — clad in leathers and polarized sunglasses — performed a free show for Berry and others in attendance. “If you’re going to do a heavy metal show, you’ve got to give them the full 100%. You can’t dial it back. You’ve got to take it to 11,” said guitarist Josh Colins, adding that he was honored that the act were invited to perform. “[It] warmed my heart that they thought of us. I told the guys right away, and everyone was immediately on board.” To mark the occasion, a custom, one-of-a-kind concert ticket was printed up for Berry. Hospital staff painted his nails, and he wore an Iron Maiden tee. “[I had] nurses coming up to me after and hugging me and tearing up and saying, ‘I’m so glad Tim got to have this,’” Lawson said, adding of Berry’s own experience, “Tim was really blissed out by it.” The Scepter recently performed an album release show in Ottawa, opening up for Metal Church. The Canadian group perform at the Dominion Tavern on September 9th, opening for Louisiana “vampiric power thrash” group Void. View this post on Instagram
