Breaking News: Troxy attendees found in state of rapturous devotion to new polka-dotted alien overlords Angine de Poitrine!
Doechii, Phoebe Bridgers & Fontaines D.C. are among the headliners.
They received a cash bonus alongside the awards.
Polka-dotted microtonal prog eccentrics Angine de Poitrine won album of the year during last night’s (September 22nd) Polaris Music Prize gala in Canada for their much-hyped Vol. II, and they likewise received the SOCAN Polaris Song Prize during the ceremony for the album’s “Fabienk.” The Quebecois duo beat out 9 other Canadian acts also nominated for the Grand Prize: Aquakultre, Begonia, Bibi Club, Charlotte Cornfield, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Rochelle Jordan, Les Louanges, Peaches and Tanya Tagaq. Polaris’ criteria is to judge “music based solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre, sales history or label affiliation.” The band’s guitarist-bassist Khn de Poitrine and drummer Klek de Poitrine were in attendance at Toronto, Ontario’s Massey Hall, and they performed their song “Fabienk” for the crowd. The concert and awards ceremony was recorded by CBC for a future episode of the network’s CBC Music Presents: Live At Massey Hall series. Khn and Klek went up on-stage to accept the award, but they didn’t make a speech. “That all this attention is being directed toward music this rock-driven and this complex is unexpected, yet entirely deserved,” manager Sébastien Collin stated on their behalf. “This artistic project is the result of a lifetime of refinement, collaboration, a drive to push beyond one’s limits, and a refusal to be confined by any established framework. Beyond the innovation and the extreme level of difficulty, the band has managed to create music that is incredibly catchy and accessible, which makes it all the more impressive. “Congratulations to Angine de Poitrine, congratulations to the other nominees for innovating in their own ways, and thank you to Polaris for this tremendous recognition.” Angine de Poitrine earned a $30,000 CAD cash prize for the Grand Prize, courtesy of the Slaight Family Foundation, and another $10,000 CAD for winning the song prize, courtesy of performance rights organization SOCAN. Angine de Poitrine take off for a European tour in October, but begin touring North America again by November. You’ll find the show info here. Vinyl and CD copies of both Vol. I and Vol. II are available now in Revolver’s shop. View this post on Instagram View this post on Instagram
