Down are back with another heavy taste of their heavily-anticipated Volume V album. After reciting a NOLA-saluting “Blood Oath” in the summer, the sludged-up stoner supergroup have returned to relay “The Myth.” The new track is the second preview from Volume V, and it features a few different movements, from blues-pressed grooves and classic metal chugging, to a high-flying proto-metal midsection. Vocalist Philip H. Anselmo power-growls through it all while contemplating those who lock horns with Azrael and get their “names etched upon the rock.” These figures raise our spirits high, per the track (“We are the outliers of life…And we are the luckiest fucks alive / When times are tough, they count on us”). It’s seemingly about worshipping our rock and roll heroes, and the sacrifices made by those doing their heavy metal duty. “It’s a perfect example of a classic Down collaboration,” guitarist Kirk Windstein said in a statement. “Amazing vocals, great riffs, and it comes together in a great Down song!”“‘The Myth’ is classic Down in all its hammer-fisted glory leading into a ‘70s jam trip that’s damn well worthy of the ride,” adds co-guitarist Pepper Keenan. “Deliberate decisions of all the things we love… Quoting my main man. ‘When times are tough, they count on us!’” You’ll find a music video for the song up above. As previously reported Down’s Volume V was prepped by Anselmo (Pantera), guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Sun Dont Shine), drummer Jimmy Bower (Crowbar, Eyehategod) and bassist Pat Bruders (Goatwhore, Crowbar). They recorded at Anselmo’s Nodferatu’s Lair home studio throughout 2025. “Everybody played their asses off, wrote great riffs, and Philip is singing amazing,” Windstein had previously said in a statement. “There’s so much electricity when we get together. To me, it’s the same vibe as our debut NOLA, but we’ve got another 35 years of experience as songwriters.” Down’s Volume V sees release November 20th via Nuclear Blast Records. A pre-order for the double LP on “Smoke”-colored vinyl (limited to 500 copies) is currently up in Revolver’s shop. Pantera are making their way back to NOLA, with the current iteration of the groove-metal masters set to headline a new two-day festival in New Orleans, Louisiana called “The Great NOLA Trendkill.” Better yet, the lineup also feature brothers-in-arms Down, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Label Society, Crowbar and more. The fest is set to go down November 20th and 21st at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana, and it will mark Pantera’s first show in the area since their promo run behind The Great Southern Trendkill in 1996. The new festival name obviously pays homage to that record, as well as NOLA, the iconic 1994 debut from stoner-sludge supergroup Down — which features Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, as well as Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan and Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein. Additionally, the metal fest will feature performances from friends and associated acts including Power Trip, Eyehategod, Pig Destroyer, Rāde, and Herakleion. “ To be back in New Orleans with such a package of bands and events is a dream come true,” Pantera and Down vocalist Anselmo says in a statement. “Besides Pantera and Down, we have great NOLA and national bands playing, Housecore Records and Housecore Horror specialties, horror industry personalities, talented artists, and so much more. Please come down to my hometown and have a blast the entire weekend!” Pre-sales for the event are already live, while general ticket sales begin this Friday (September 11th) at 11 am ET.
