Jutes is looking for meaningful connection, and the Canadian alt-rock explorer is communicating this through the release of his new “Mannequin” single, which precedes his just-announced next album, Chin Up, Beautiful. The track is described in a press release as being about “this toxic desire to be seen and loved by people you don t even know…Losing yourself and becoming whatever it is they want to see. From the softened verses through to the melodically alt-chunked choruses, Jutes invokes lonely desperation (“I’ll be who you want me to…I’ll be your mannequin”) with a series of whispers and plaintive, if soaring vocals. A video for “Mannequin” can be found up above. It features performance footage from Jutes and his band, but also shots of him strolling through an empty home, a behind-the-scenes look at the coupling rituals of mannequins, and an explosive finale that suggests this may have been shot near the Nevada Test Sites. Jutes also premiered goodnight (interlude) 3, a moodier barrage of chopped vocals, icy snap beats and guitar fuzz. He says it’s “about having a good night in the midst of a broken life, and you can stream that one down below. The impending Chin Up, Beautiful follows last year’s Dilworth project, and is described in whole as “a futuristic, post-apocalyptic meditation on numbness, survival, and the quiet collapse of feeling in an overwhelming world.” The world feels really cooked right now and it s impossible to feel everything all at once, so we just go numb and fake smiles because we re helpless, Jutes says. That s how I was feeling when I made this. It pulls from elements of my music when I first started singing and incorporates them with everything I ve learned about my voice and songwriting since then. The tracklisting to the 13-song project has yet to be revealed in full, but it will include Jutes’ “Icarus” and “Disassociate” singles from earlier this year. The album is out August 5th, and can be pre-saved here. As previously reported, Jutes also launches a headlining tour August 11th at the Van Buren in Phoenix, Arizona. You’ll find the rest of the date info here.
