Despite all their rage, Smashing Pumpkins still announced their “The Rats in a Cage” anniversary tour over the weekend. The upcoming trip celebrates the 30th anniversary of their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and the tour will feature two distinct sets for the album and “nearly four decades of hits and dark treasures.” The tour was announced during their “A Funeral for Zero” livestream on Sunday (May 17th), which took place at Los Angeles, California’s Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The event featured a memorial for Billy Corgan’s “Zero” persona, followed by a live set by The Smashing Pumpkins that included the first performance of “Here Is No Why” since 1997. “Staging a Mellon Collie-themed show is something we’ve discussed for over a decade, and finally the stars have aligned and exactly on the terms I’d set: which was to build a special night around its most enduring aspirations and ideas,” Corgan said in a statement. He confirmed that the first set of the night exclusively showcases Mellon Collie songs “in a highly theatrical setting,” while the Pumpkins’ second set will rotate through songs between debut LP Gish and 2024’s Aghori Mhori Mei. Corgan and Co.’s “Rats in a Cage” tour begins September 30th at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, and proceeds to hit both coasts and a bunch of Canadian dates before wrapping up at Los Angeles, California’s Kia Forum on November 12th. They then hit the Darker Waves festival in Huntington Beach, California on November 14th. Tickets for all of the fall headline go on sale this Thursday (May 21st) at 10 AM local time.
