Doom-metal dragonauts Sleep are back but they look a little different. Guitarist Matt Pike, also of High on Fire, is no longer in the band, leaving vocalist-bassist Al Cisneros as the sole remaining OG member. Replacing Pike in Sleep s current lineup is Bubba Dupree, of the seminal D.C. hardcore band Void, while the Melvins very busy Dale Crover takes over drum duties.⁠ Thusly reconfigured, the stoner-rock legends just surprise-released a new single, Have Spacesuit Will Travel, announced a big fall North American tour, and released the first issue of the Sleep Comic Book, written by Cisneros.⁠ The vibe of the first jam was obvious, he commented of Have Spacesuit Will Travel. It was blue sunglasses-era Iommi in the quality, and equally awesome is Bubba is also one of the coolest people I ve been able to make music with. As for the Sleep Comic Book, issue #1 is illustrated by Dave Kloc and Arik Roper, and begins the saga of The Marijuanaut, transporting readers to the riff-filled land of Planet Iommia where our hero encounters with The Weedian and more. It s available for purchase in both a special and standard edition via Third Man Books. Sleep s fall tour is set to kick off September 8th in San Diego, and includes a headline performance at Levitation Festival in Austin, Texas. Tickets will be on sale for artist presale June 23rd at 10 a.m. local time, and public on-sale June 25th at 10 a.m. local time. Mastodon launched their latest European tour in Czechia last night (June 3rd), treating fans to a bunch of heavy favorites, as well as the live debut of their new single, “Your Ghost Again.” The show took place at Prague’s O2 Universum, and featured an opening set from U.K. metal expanders Loathe. Mastodon kicked off their headlining set with Once More ‘Round the Sun’s “Tread Lightly,” then played a few more songs before giving “Your Ghost Again” — a song reflecting on the memory of late founding guitarist Brent Hinds — its live debut. “Just yesterday, we released a new song, and it s the first song in our entire career that wasn t worked on with our friend Brent — he passed away last year and he is no longer with us,” bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders said from the stage. “So, we d like to do a new song for you guys, and we d like to dedicate it to Brent, because we miss him and we love him also.” Beyond this, the group’s 17-song set pulled from all eras of the band, including Remission’s “Mother Puncher,” a series of Leviathan and Crack the Skye classics, and all the way up to Hushed Grim songs “More Than I Could Chew” and “The Crux.” And then they closed things out with a cover of Melvins’ “The Bit.” You’ll find fan-shot footage from throughout the night up above and down below. The tracklisting is below as well (via setlist.fm). Mastodon’s European tour resumes tomorrow (June 5th) with an appearance at Nürburg, Germany’s Rock Am Ring fest.
