Drummer Jay Weinberg has leveled into another song from his ongoing singles series. Following team-ups with members of Deafheaven, NOWHERE2RUN and Softcult, he’s now tasked Coliseum and Fotocrime member Ryan Patterson with the heavy duty of delivering growls and guitars on new tune “Another Head on the Pile.” And damn…does he oblige. Weinberg and Patterson had teased the arrival of “Another Head on the Pile” earlier in the week over socials, via posts of them posed together that were captioned with cryptic warnings (“Don’t think you’re safe”). The song itself brings hard-swerved post-hardcore beats and lush-but-battering chord slams to the forefront. Patterson gruffly intones warnings about a machine that “hungers for your pain” and other ominous occurrences lurking about (“They haunt your dreams / The specters and the thieves”). All told, it has a bit of Helmet-ish vibe, and undulates between expertly queasy guitarmonizing and double-pounded drum moments. A new video finds Patterson and Weinberg sweatin’ through a performance of the tune. You’ll find that streaming up above. As previously reported, Weinberg has been working through a series of single drops that’ll eventually culminate in an album release. He’s handling the bulk of the instrumentation, and has asked a bunch of friends to handle vocals. Revolver teamed-up with Weinberg earlier in the year to press up an exclusive 12-inch that features his blackgazing “Sandstone” song with Deafheaven’s George Clarke and the “Drone Operator” track with Jami Morgan and Shade Balderose of NOWHERE2RUN. The exclusive 12” is available on “Green & Purple Starburst” wax, and includes artwork and design — including an etched B-side — from visual artist and noted Mastodon collaborator Paul Romano.⁠The record is limited to 250 copies worldwide, and is available now in Revolver’s shop.
