After toasting up a campfire-scented acoustic anthem earlier in the summer, Amon Amarth are cranking things back up to announce the arrival of their next epic album, The Allfather Awakens. To be clear, the Viking-metal mainstays are raising their horns up high with new single “Gjallarhorn.” The latest thunder-cracking Amon Amarth song, which is the opener on the upcoming album, parts the skies with classic guitarmonizing, a galloping pace and deep-chanted “whoas.” Above all that, vocalist Johan Hegg casts a grisly tale about Oden, the Norse god and titular “Allfather” described in a statement as “a deity of war, wisdom, death, magic, and poetry.” The song follows the recent acoustic number “Upphaf” and last year’s “We Rule the Waves” single. All three are now confirmed to be a part of the upcoming, 10-song The Allfather Awakens. While the album is said to further explore the mythology of Oden — a longtime focus of the Swedish group — it’s added that Amon Amarth’s 13th full-length, which follows 2022’s The Great Heathen Army, is not a concept record, but rather “a collection of historically inspired epic tales of conflict and sacrifice for a greater good.” The video for “Gjallarhorn,” which you’ll find above, is a retelling of Oden’s search for wisdom, a feat that found him gouging out his own eye “in exchange for cosmic insight and foresight that would shape the fate of gods and men alike.” The album was put together during two sessions at producer Jacob Hansen’s studio in Denmark — a spring 2025 session and the concluding recordings in March of this year. “We worked on one song at a time and made each song as good as possible,” guitarist Olavi Mikkonen confirms. “Then we recorded one song at a time until each track was totally finished–drums, guitars, and vocals. Only then did we start on the next one.” The Allfather Awakens enters metaldom’s consciousness October 2nd via Metal Blade. That’s the cover art and tracklisting down below. As previously reported, Amon Amarth have a number of upcoming shows on the horizon across Europe. It’s now added that the group will soon bring “entirely new production inspired by Oden’s legendary Golden Hall” to the stage. Amon Amarth – “Upphaf” Gather round and let Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg growl you a tale of Gods and the giants of yore. This week’s “Upphaf” is the first-ever all-acoustic song from the Viking-metal veterans, scaling back the Valhalla-shaking distortion of their classic sound. The band’s unplugged number plays out as a campfire epic, resplendent in chiming unplugged guitar tones and nine-realms-crossing storytelling. Anthrax – “The Edge of Perfection” Scott Ian calls Anthrax’s second Cursum Perficio single the best song they’ve ever written. That’s a loaded statement, considering the East Coast icons helped shaped the sound of metal as we know it over the past 40 years — their catalog sports some of the genre’s most revered, riff-heavy anthems ever. What we’ll say is this: The song indeed rips. It’s a wildly inspired arrangement that involves elements of blackened melancholy, paranoid arpeggiating, gate-crashing blasts from Charlie Benate, a wildly singable shred solo, and a passionate vocal performance from Joey Belladonna. Simply masterful. Devil Master – “You Worms’ Vain Delusions” Just in time for a sweltering summer, metal scoundrels Devil Master increase the heat with this scorching taste of their upcoming album, Bloody Dreams — a feat that threatens to turn their corpse paint into melting schmears of Philly cream cheese. Piercingly punky one-two beats and blackened trills are the backbone of the madness, while awesomely-named vocalist-bassist Disembody Through Unparalleled Pleasure ups the ante with menacing groans about humans writhing eternally in a pile of creepy crawlers. A spikes-and-leather-framed Bosch painting come to life, hellacious to the max. HANABIE. – “Life Is Short, O Brave Girl” Life is short, so why not spend some more time with HANABIE. while you can? The Japanese hybridists bring together a high-protein beatdown of nu-thuggin’ riffs, hyper-speed J-pop, electronic swerves and more. Yukina delivers destructive growls and nervy yelps while bassist Hettsu sweetens things up with her melodious positivisms (“Let’s play the game”). The wrestling angle of the vid finds the quartet flubbing a Rocky-style exercise montage, at least until their coach slings them a mysteriously powers-inducing jug of juice. They then lay the smackdown on a masked baddie and claim the belt as “Harajuku-core” heavyweights. Initiate – “Numb to the Pain” We’re anything but numb to the soul-stirring hardcore groove Initiate affixed to their first single in nearly a year and a half, though we admit that the song stunned us in our tracks the first time we cranked it up. “Numb the Pain” strikes deep to the core, whether bounding through natural harmonic-spiked heaviness or soothing, sea-green melodicism. Vocalist Crystal Pak seeks inner peace, excising her intrusive thoughts with a cathartic scream. It all makes for an energetic endorphin rush that’s got us eagerly awaiting their forthcoming With Love // With Rage EP for new label home Blue Grape Music. To the Grave – “Nail Mary” “Thou shalt not kill anymore.” Australian Vegan deathcore outfit To the Grave are storming cathedrals and slaughterhouses with the savage sounds of their “Nail Mary,” a no-punches-pulled attack of virulent drums, razor-lined riffs and lyrics that take aim at religious practices that come at the cost of the animals. A grave yet super-sick statement of intent from their forthcoming, activism-minded LIBERATION FRONT LP.

It’s been almost four years since Swedish Viking rowers Amon Amarth unleashed The Great Heathen Army, but they hardly sit idle. Now they approach a new way of songwriting on their first-ever acoustic excursion, "Uppha". The single serves as the quiet moment to what lies ahead, before the fury of their next studio album, which according to the label they are currently working on.

Viking-metal mainstays Amon Amarth have entered their unplugged stage. Today (July 8th), and for the first time ever, the Swedish quintet delivered a rustic and entirely acoustically-strummed anthem that they call “Upphaf.” The song chimes into focus with acoustic strums and propulsive, elemental percussion. Above all that, frontman Johan Hegg unearths a craggy, legend-casting croak about “old tales of men I recall from long ago,” including “giants of yore who gave me bread in the days gone by.” A press release further explains that “Upphaf” acts as “an oral history whispered under the shadow of the Allfather, proving [Amon Amarth’s] interest in Oden cuts just as deep by firelight as it does on epic global stages.” You can check out the aesthetically softer but no less epic addition to Amon Amarth’s Norse myth-borne songbook via the music video up above, which finds the band intoning their tale around a campfire. Amon Amarth’s “Upphaf” follows last year’s bombastic, battle-driven and decidedly more electrified “We Rule the Waves” single. Proper details have not yet been shed behind Amon Amarth’s full-length follow-up to 2022’s The Great Heathen Army, but a studio album is in the works.
