The prog-hop artist will be touring with Periphery and more this fall.
One of those songs drew inspiration from a Darkthrone record.
After spending the past year posting up supportive guest spots with vianova and PRESIDENT, hip-hop-and-prog-merging rapper-guitarist Ando San has just delivered a pair of singles for his new label home, Sumerian Records. The musician’s “Hype Man / Triggas” arrived on platforms and through a double-sized music video earlier today (September 10th), marking Ando San’s new path forward with Sumerian. His last solo single was this past February’s “iLL”, though he also semi-recently showed up on a remix of vianova’s “Oh No” and appears on “Hate Figure” from PRESIDENT’s newly-released album, Blood of Your Empire. “Hype Man” begins with lo-fi-effected, hyper-fast snares and super-screeched vocals before Ando San fully leans into boom-bap rhythms, chunked-and-grooved seven-string riffs and cooly spat lines about being not only the “right man,” but the guy with the “right plan.” The artist adds that the grimy, fuzz-forward sounds were in part inspired by Norwegian black-metal vets Darkthrone’ Ravishing Grimness release from 1999. “I thought it would be cool to start the song with a black metal vibe and then lead into a heavy beat,” Ando San explains in a statement. “I named it ‘Hype Man’ because at the time of recording the song I needed to hype myself up. I’m usually alone in my room making these songs and this one in particular needed that energy! I feel like you need to be your own personal ‘Hype Man’ to get through things when you really don’t have anybody around to pump you up. It’s a super power!” While armed with a similar musical motif, “Triggas” slows the pace even further, and features both Ando San and guest rapper Mazbou Q hitting the mic. San adds that the song is about things that trigger past traumas, and how to work through those feelings constructively. The video for Ando San’s double-single — which presents a corpse-painted push pit taking place around the artist — can be seen up above. It’s unclear what’s next on his release schedule. His last album was 2023’s Seeing pastures. Ando San takes off for a U.K tour with Don Broco later this month, and will support Periphery on their North American run later this fall.
