Up until this morning (September 18th), it’d been a decade since Anthrax put out an album — but to paraphrase the classic thrashers, there’s always room for one more. In this case, today marks the release of the quintet’s absurdly anticipated Cursum Perficio. The band had teased the collection off-and-on for years, but formally cast a spell this spring via the launch of the classically-thrashed “It’s for the Kids” — a whammy-crazed, hard-edged outing whose video was shot in the same locale as their Eighties anthem, “Madhouse.” While that was a notably nod towards Anthrax’s mighty metal heritage, Cursum Perficio also pointed towards a bold new future, particularly with the epically blasted-and-blackened, melodically mournful “The Edge of Perfection,” a song founding guitarist Scott Ian recently called the “apex predator” of their catalog, as well as “the best song we’ve ever written and the best thing I’ve ever been a part of creatively.” They followed that with the anthemic, arena-ready “Everybody’s Got a Plan.” Now, Cursum Perficio has materialized in full, bringing with it contemplative-yet-pounding pieces that let vocalist Joey Belladonna’s vibrato fly high (“The Long Goodbye”), power-swung crushers (“T.O.M.B.”), riotous metal-punk odes to home (“NYC 93”) and dark-thrashed squealers (“Watch it Go”). You can capture all the magic via the full album stream up above. Anthrax’s Cursum Perficio is out now via Megaforce. As previously reported, the album was produced by Anthrax and Jay Ruston, and was recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles, California. Vinyl and CD copies are available in Revolver’s shop. Anthrax rocked Louder Than Life in Louisville, Kentucky, last night (September 17th), and will be opening up a handful of shows on Iron Maiden’s current North American run. Those concerts also feature Megadeth. You can scope the remaining itinerary here.
Plus releases from Early Moods, Slothrust, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Krallice.

A ranking of the band Anthrax leading up to the release of Cursum Perficio, available worldwide September 18th via Megaforce Records/Nuclear Blast Records.
Less than a day out from the release of Anthrax’s Cursum Perficio — their first album in a decade — the thrash veterans have broken off one last preview in the form of a chain-swinging video for its title track — which happens to star onetime Samhain drummer London May. The video, which was premiered today (September 17th) through Rolling Stone, was directed by documentarian Don Argott — who likewise crafted Lamb of God’s As the Palaces Burn film and co-directed Taylor Swift’s The End of an Era docu-series. This black-and-white vid finds May waking up bound in chains, painfully dragging himself through rugged terrain. The Samhain guitarist is challenged even further when the chains wrap themselves around his body and it starts snowing. Per May, the shoot ended up being grueling and painful IRL. “‘Cursum Perficio’ brought out the beast in me,” May told Rolling Stone. “I broke my finger the very first day and had to beg them to keep shooting. That was real chain and real pain. I went through hell and back for Anthrax and Don Argott — and I’d happily do it all again!” The song is a gritty, six-minute metal anthem where Joey Belladonna belts out various lines about eternal struggle and the journey of life, and what it all means at the end of the day. This is reflected metaphorically through the chain-dragging music vid, per guitarist and song lyricist Scott Ian. “The video for ‘Cursum Perficio’ captures all of the themes I’m exploring in the lyrics … they’re epic in scope … how do you quantify your life?” Ian explained to Rolling Stone. “How do you measure oceans of time, and what did you do with it? And were all the struggles worth it in the end?” “What I love about this video is that it matches the tone of the song so well,” added drummer Charlie Benante. “This song has always been the dark horse of the record. This video may be as well.” You can peep the vid up above. As previously reported, Cursum Perficio is out September 18th via Megaforce. The new single had been preceded by the thrashing “It’s For the Kids,” their blast-forward “The Edge of Perfection” and the fist-pounding “Everybody’s Got a Plan.” You can pre-order the album and other Anthrax album’s in Revolver’s shop.
