Metal News: Darkest Hour Premiere New Single & Music Video 'Warrior' From Upcoming New Album 'Suffer Divine'
With a slight nod to an LL Cool J hit.
Darkest Hour doled out some divine pain last month via the ruthless title cut to the band’s forthcoming Suffer Divine album. The hits keep coming and they don’t stop coming, as the D.C. metal vets have now put up their dukes to deliver a knockout blow with the second album tease, “Warrior.” The song cracks a menacing, familiar tone for longtime melodeath practitioners Darkest Hour, with guitarist Mike Schleibaum confirming in a statement that the blistening piece “showcases [Darkest Hour’s] melodic death metal tendencies with a bit of a modern twist.” “It draws you deep into a fresh yet familiar Darkest Hour sound, he continues, “I love the progressiveness of [guitarist] Nico [Santora]’s solo, the intricacy of Travis [Orbin’s] drum work, [bassist Aaron] Deal’s devastating low end, John [Henry]’s vocal delivery, and lyrical density.” As with “Suffer Divine,” the song seemingly displays how the upcoming full-length — Darkest Hour’s first since 2024’s Perpetual Terminal — is “full of both rage and technicality.” “Lyrically, this song is meant to reach out to the intrapersonal warrior,” frontman Henry adds of the thematic context. “The internal struggle is often the most important battle we ever fight. This song touches on the idea of gaining control of your thoughts, actions, and purpose. It’s meant to be fuel for action.” A punishing performance video can be found up above. Its scrappy, pugilist spirit was inspired by both Martin Scorcese’s fists-throwing Raging Bull film and the boastful, get-in-the-ring vibe of LL Cool J’s classic “Mama Said Knock You Out” music video. Schleibaum adds that the clip is “both fun and tough at the same time.” As previously reported, Suffer Divine is out October 30th via MNRK Heavy. A pre-order for an exclusive vinyl variant on “Burrowing Deep” wax (limited to 300 copies) is still available in Revolver’s shop.
