Multi-instrumentalist Jay Weinberg has made his vocal debut on "Drown Fountain," his new collaborative track with Softcult.
Though Mastodon are currently pushing towards the release of a new album, co-founders Bill Kelliher, Brann Dailor and Troy Sanders have taken some time to address the passing of the band’s former guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds. A new, behind-the-scenes mini-documentary called The Mastodon in the Room has been released to highlight the life of their friend, address the challenges of their relationship and honor his memory. The 35-minute short film begins with a clip from Mastodon’s summer 2025 performance at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska, where drummer-vocalist Dailor spoke of Hinds just one day after his fatal traffic accident in Atlanta, Georgia. He described the imperfect “ups and downs of a 25-year relationship,” while underlining that they were “brothers to the end.” “I wasn’t ready to address it,” he now says in the doc, explaining that he was processing the news in real time. The film finds the three surviving original members of Mastodon going to Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre together to watch archival footage of their time with Hinds. They discuss the thrill of traveling in a van together, and moving from club shows to stadium performances. They watch good-natured vids of them and Hinds goofing around backstage, reflecting on his sense of humor and love of horror movies. While the film discusses their “special chemistry” and the making of key albums, it also addresses Hinds’ history of substance abuse, how that impacted the band dynamic, and the sense of disconnect they felt from their longtime partner and friend. “When it was great it was great, but when it was fucking horrible it was really fucking horrible,” Kelliher says at one point, Dailor later noting it was “depressing, sad and fucked-up” to realize they were drifting apart. Sanders recalls reading a letter to the whole group about being unhappy with the way things were going, with the goal of righting the ship. Reportedly, after Hinds realized that many of the bassist’s grievances were about him, he stood up halfway through Sanders’ speech and left the room. That was the last time the bassist saw him alive. It’s a tough watch at times, but Mastodon’s reflective look at their relationship with Hinds can be seen up above, while an additional note from the band can be seen below. As previously reported, the group — now rounded out by guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira — recently delivered the single “Your Ghost Again,” which is, in part, a tribute to Hinds. The song is also a preview of their forthcoming ninth LP, which follows 2021’s Hushed and Grim. The band recently wrapped a run of European tour dates and will begin their North American “Poisonous Weapons” tour September 16th in Orlando, Florida. Mastodon have just debuted a 35-minute long tribute short film, dedicated to their late guitarist, Brent Hinds.
Following drummer Jay Weinberg’s crushing pair of singles with members of Deafheaven and NOWHERE2RUN, the former Slipknot skinsman has unveiled a soft-and-gauzy shoegaze collab with Canadian outfit Softcult. Weinberg’s third song for his developing singles series is called “Drown Fountain,” and it build itself up through a hypnagogic tapestry of distortion-blown, yet heavenly guitar strums. He gently whispers his lines alongside Softcult’s Mercedes Arn-Horn — who he noted in an Instagram post “has one of the most incredible voices in modern music” — before the song fades off towards an ambient, orange-aura sunset. The song also features contributions from Arn-Horn’s twin sibling, Phoenix. Notably, Weinberg reveals that this is his vocal debut, and the song is absent of drums. “‘Drown Fountain’ is this weird song I started writing back in 2013 that I’d keep revisiting over the years, but I could never figure out how to get it across the finish line,” Weinberg explains in a statement, adding that falling into Softcult’s music is what ultimately unlocked the track’s full potential. “It took my introduction to Softcult’s music and reaching out to see if they’d be interested in collaborating for the song to finally become what it was meant to be. It’s an honor to work with them on this song, especially in that it feels more vulnerable than anything I’ve created in the past. “I’ve never sang before, I’ve always had my loud drums to ‘protect me’ in a way…it’s all new and exciting territory, and to have Mercedes and Phoenix help me bring it to life in this beautiful way has been an artistic dream.” You can sample the sweet and hazy flow of “Drown Fountain” via the visualizer up above. As previously reported, Revolver recently partnered with Weinberg to produce an exclusive 12″ pressing of “Drone Operator,” his song with Deafheaven’s George Clarke, and “Sandstone,” his collaboration with NOWHERE2RUN. The vinyl release arrives on “Green & Purple Starburst” wax, and features sleeve art and a B-side etching from visual artist Paul Romano.The 12” is limited to 250 copies, and can be ordered from Revolver’s shop. It’s been a monumental week for Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher. As previously reported, the band launched a European tour, released their “Your Ghost Again” single as a tribute to late guitarist Brent Hinds, and announced an upcoming North American tour. Now, it’s been revealed that Kelliher is part of newly regrouped metalcore band Burnt by the Sun. The announcement came via Burnt by the Sun earlier today (June 5th), with it being confirmed that the New Jersey outfit are back following a 15-year absence. Earlier this year, Relapse Records had revealed that they were repressing a deluxe discography box set and standard editions of the band’s full-lengths — 2002’s Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution, 2003 The Perfect is The Enemy of the Good and 2009’s Heart of Darkness — and putting them in people’s hands by today. To further celebrate this feat, the band revealed that they’re officially back for “a second act born of lifelong friendships.” It’s explained that the core group of vocalist Mike Olender, guitarist John Adubato, bassist Ted Patterson and drummer Dave Witte reconnected in late 2025 at the funeral of Patterson’s father, which got the old bandmates talking about their time as Burnt By the Sun. “Talking over text and everything is great, but all of us sitting down, talking, rehashing old memories when the Old Man was out with Burnt really moved it forward for us,” Patterson said in a statement. Kelliher was brought into the fold as another longtime friend, and an integral part of BBTS’ growth. “Our early years mirrored Mastodon’s, having shared the stage many times in the early 2000s,” Patterson continued. “Bill was actually part of that initial creative spark that led to BBTS getting formed. Back in the late ’90s Bill and John were writing together, some of which became BBTS’s first recorded material, and so for him to be part of this new chapter of the band is a reconnection to our roots and love for this kind of creative expression. “We are also really excited about the new dynamic that Bill will add in terms of our live shows and new material.” While their upcoming plans have yet to be defined, Patterson added that he’s excited to be “getting another chance to make some noise with some of the best people in my life.” Kelliher has yet to issue a statement on joining Burnt By the Sun. As previously reported, he and Mastodon are currently out on the road, and they play Nürburg, Germany’s Rock Am Ring fest today. Ring the bell and sound the alarm: Fuming Mouth are back with a monstrous single, which marks the band’s first piece of music with new drummer Jay Weinberg. “A Blaze of Nihilism” appears on the New England outfit’s forthcoming The Ringing Bell album, and its clarion call comprises roiling death-metal grooves, savage feedback, insidious shred and fates-fortified growls (“My strength builds and spreads like fire”). The Ringing Bell is described in a press release as “an album forged through perseverance, transformation, and an unwavering commitment to moving forward.” The sessions at Converge member Kurt Ballou’s GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts found vocalist-guitarist Mark Whelan, guitarist Pat Merson and bassist Chris Berg working alongside former Slipknot and Suicidal Tendencies drummer Weinberg, the results reportedly “pushing their trademark fusion of death metal and hardcore to new extremes, delivering the most powerful and fully realized release of their career.” The 11-song outing follows Fuming Mouth’s Last Day of the Sun album from 2023, and marks the group’s return to Triple B Records, following a stint on Nuclear Blast. Mastodon launched their latest European tour in Czechia last night (June 3rd), treating fans to a bunch of heavy favorites, as well as the live debut of their new single, “Your Ghost Again.” The show took place at Prague’s O2 Universum, and featured an opening set from U.K. metal expanders Loathe. Mastodon kicked off their headlining set with Once More ‘Round the Sun’s “Tread Lightly,” then played a few more songs before giving “Your Ghost Again” — a song reflecting on the memory of late founding guitarist Brent Hinds — its live debut. “Just yesterday, we released a new song, and it s the first song in our entire career that wasn t worked on with our friend Brent — he passed away last year and he is no longer with us,” bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders said from the stage. “So, we d like to do a new song for you guys, and we d like to dedicate it to Brent, because we miss him and we love him also.” Beyond this, the group’s 17-song set pulled from all eras of the band, including Remission’s “Mother Puncher,” a series of Leviathan and Crack the Skye classics, and all the way up to Hushed Grim songs “More Than I Could Chew” and “The Crux.” And then they closed things out with a cover of Melvins’ “The Bit.” You’ll find fan-shot footage from throughout the night up above and down below. Los Angeles-based post-hardcore quintet Quiet Fear have teamed up with Revolver to premiere their second single, “Sombras.” Listen below. Rooted in ’90s-inspired screamo, the song showcases atmospheric restraint, perceptive lyrics and a churning melody. According to the band, it “speaks about a society that sees pain and chooses to ignore it.” Along with previous explosive single “Retén,” “Sombras” appears on Quiet Fear s upcoming sophomore album, La Tierra Arriba / El Abismo Abajo, which is set to arrive June 19th via Iodine Recordings. Adding to the post-hardcore/screamo heavyweight boost, the LP was recorded by Alex Estrada (who engineered Touché Amoré’s powerful …To the Beat of a Dead Horse) and mastered by Jack Shirley (who produced several Deafheaven albums as well as Jeromes Dream’s profound The Gray in Between). Their fingerprints are crystal clear on the tracks, helping to bring out the burning chaos through modern production. On La Tierra Arriba / El Abismo Abajo, the Chicano group — comprising vocalist Jonatan Patiño, guitarist Christopher Tortoledo, bassist Adrian Saul Ayala and drummer Edgar Rivas — use bilingual lyrics to discuss systemic oppression, isolation and personal collapse, all shaped by identity and lived experience. “Sombras” is screamed in Spanish. Addressing the song, the band said: “The phrases ‘gotas de llantos ignorados’ and ‘huellas de los olvidados’ point to suffering that is clearly visible, yet dismissed. The lines ‘¿de qué nos sirven los ojos… la boca… las manos… la mente?’ questions the purpose of being human if we don’t employ ourselves to help, speak or act. Overall, it’s a critique of indifference — suggesting that if we choose not to see, not to speak and not to love, ‘la ignorancia nos acaba’ — ignorance ultimately consumes us.” And when it came to the song’s composition, “Sombras” took Quiet Fear about three days to complete and was also inspired by Aughts Italian post-hardcore band Shizune. “We wanted the song to have a very melodic and subtle sound compared to the other tracks on the record but still have that punch to grab the listener,” explains the band.
