NOLA denizens of sludge Down have announced a summer run of headlining dates that will see them hitting the road with iconic alt-metal brutalists Helmet and Housecore rockers Spirit in the Room. The trip was announced by the three bands earlier today (May 27th). While Down will be headlining all dates, this is being called the “Strap It Down” tour as a tributary portmanteau between the sludge supergroup and Helmet’s 1990 debut LP, Strap It On. The tour begins August 15th at the Eastern in Atlanta, Georgia, and wraps September 2nd at the Ramova Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. The tour route also includes Down’s appearances at Zakk Wylde’s two Berzerkus Festival dates, while Down splinter off to support Slayer at a Reign in Blood 40th anniversary show Shakopee, Minnesota’s Mystic Lake Amphitheater on September 4th. Pre-sales begin today at noon ET, while the general onsale is this Friday (May 29th) at 10:00 a.m. local time. Down will likewise be offering limited VIP packages that include a soundcheck experience, a meet greet with the band, a photo opportunity, a signed poster, and an exclusive merch item. You can find out more about ticketing here, while the run of dates is down below. As previously reported, Down revealed in a studio update earlier this year that “the new…record is done,” though they haven’t delivered the details on when we’ll hear the album. Their last full length was 2007’s Down III: Over the Under, though they issued a pair of Down IV EPs in 2012 and 2014. Jutes is looking for meaningful connection, and the Canadian alt-rock explorer is communicating this through the release of his new “Mannequin” single, which precedes his just-announced next album, Chin Up, Beautiful. The track is described in a press release as being about “this toxic desire to be seen and loved by people you don t even know…Losing yourself and becoming whatever it is they want to see. From the softened verses through to the melodically alt-chunked choruses, Jutes invokes lonely desperation (“I’ll be who you want me to…I’ll be your mannequin”) with a series of whispers and plaintive, if soaring vocals. A video for “Mannequin” can be found up above. It features performance footage from Jutes and his band, but also shots of him strolling through an empty home, a behind-the-scenes look at the coupling rituals of mannequins, and an explosive finale that suggests this may have been shot near the Nevada Test Sites. Jutes also premiered goodnight (interlude) 3, a moodier barrage of chopped vocals, icy snap beats and guitar fuzz. He says it’s “about having a good night in the midst of a broken life, and you can stream that one down below. The impending Chin Up, Beautiful follows last year’s Dilworth project, and is described in whole as “a futuristic, post-apocalyptic meditation on numbness, survival, and the quiet collapse of feeling in an overwhelming world.” The world feels really cooked right now and it s impossible to feel everything all at once, so we just go numb and fake smiles because we re helpless, Jutes says. That s how I was feeling when I made this. It pulls from elements of my music when I first started singing and incorporates them with everything I ve learned about my voice and songwriting since then. The tracklisting to the 13-song project has yet to be revealed in full, but it will include Jutes’ “Icarus” and “Disassociate” singles from earlier this year. The album is out August 5th, and can be pre-saved here. As previously reported, Jutes also launches a headlining tour August 11th at the Van Buren in Phoenix, Arizona. You’ll find the rest of the date info here.

Pow!
Coming off the urgent one-two punch of Quicksand’s “Get to It” and “Regenerate” singles, the beloved veteran New York post-hardcore crew have unfurled another seize-the-day-styled single from their upcoming Bring On the Psychics album. The third preview from their Psychics is both pounding and pensive, a mid-tempo Alan Cage beat rumbling the speakers alongside a to-the-point, yet oddly pretty two-chord riff combo from Walter Schreifels. Lyrically, the vocalist-guitarist both gently coos and anxiously shouts out thoughts on days gone by, keeping himself present, and not missing out on the world around him (“You never know / Anything can happen”). The band said this of the drive and theme of the song in a statement: “‘Crystallize’ opens a new lane for us…post-punk self-actualization-core meets 1960s Batman fight scene.” You can let all that crystalize in your mind’s eye by giving the video a viewing up above. As previously reported, Bring On the Psychics is the follow up to 2021’s Distant Populations, and marks the band’s first full-length release through the esteemed Equal Vision imprint. The album was produced with Jon Markson (Drug Church, Drain), and is said to be “the sonic bridge between [Quicksand’s] heavy and influential Nineties sound and the ambitious, experimental output contained within its more recent era.” Bring On the Psychics is out July 17th, though you can currently pre-order the LP on exclusive Pink Splatter vinyl in Revolver’s shop.
