Turnstile brought hardcore back to Saturday Night Live over the weekend, with the Grammy-winning Baltimore out showing the NYC studio audience plenty of fast-paced and bounceable T.L.C. The Saturday night (October 3rd) performance had the band launching into NEVER ENOUGH’s frantically-paced “BIRDS,” wherein frontman Brendan Yates high-kicked and pirouetted his way through the high bpm intro while his bandmates thrashed and threw down gang vocals. They performed in front of the multi-chromatic backdrop they’ve been using since they began the NEVER ENOUGH campaign. Later in the show, Turnstile returned to perform the more mid-paced and jangly “I CARE,” which bled into the pop-forward stomp-mosh of “DULL.” Noticeably flanked by a bunch of rotary phones hanging on the walls, the segue between the songs involved old-school ringing sounds blaring through the speakers before Yates delivered his line, “Deep in the night, I’m waiting for the call”. During the closing credits, Johnson, Turnstile and the cast were joined by Taylor Swift, who brought out a birthday cake for the host. The T-Swift and Turnstile universes have finally crossed over.T- You’ll find footage of both performances above and below. Ahead of the Saturday taping, the group filmed some pre-show promos with host Dakota Johnson and SNL cast member Ben Marshall noting that Turnstile were the first hardcore band to be booked on the show since Fear infamously — and riotously — beef-balonied their way to the stage on Halloween, 1981. Kind of. Don’t forget that Beastie Boys, founded as an NYC hardcore band in the early Eighties, brought Ill Communication’s fast-and-furious “Heart Attack Man” to the show in 1994. Likewise, a 2010 sketch had Fred Armisen’s fictional Crisis of Conformity — featuring a wig-wearing Dave Grohl on drums — delivering a Alexander Haig-critiquing, Suicidal Tendencies-inspired, and table-toppling performance of “Fist Fight in the Parking Lot” during a wedding. Turnstile’s ongoing “NEVER ENOUGH” North American tour continues tomorrow (October 6th) at Kansas City, Kansas’ The University of Kansas on The Hill. You’ll find the rest of the date details here.
