Jeff "Mantas" Dunn puts aside differences in the past to salute the late legend.
Conrad “Cronos” Lant, founding member of extreme-metal innovators Venom, has passed away. The English music icon was 63 years old. Cronos’ passing was confirmed by his bandmates and family today (October 1st) in a socials post, which detailed the musician’s “uncompromising, fearless” approach to art and metal — as heard early on 1981’s Welcome to Hell and 1982’s Black Metal albums, landmark heavy outings that inspired the worlds of black metal, thrash and more. “For more than four decades, Conrad’s voice, bass and vision were at the heart of Venom. From the first dark rumblings of Welcome to Hell, through Black Metal, At War With Satan, Possessed and beyond, he created something that changed heavy music forever.“Venom never followed the rules. They forged their own path. And Conrad was there at the centre of it all — uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable.”Both the band and Lant’s son, Nathan, thanked Venom’s fans for their support over the decades, and for cementing his legacy as one of the greats. “I want to thank all of the Legions for all of the support you have given my dad over the years,” Nathan Lant wrote. “I know he really appreciated you all. He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on. The legend of Cronos will never die. His music will never die. His voice will never fade.” Conrad Lant co-founded Venom in the late Seventies, and had initially been the group’s rhythm guitarist. By 1978, he adopted the nickname Cronos and began playing bass. The band’s motorized pace and satanic imagery, as heard on early rippers like Welcome to Hell’s “In League With Satan,” made fans of many — Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica have cited Venom as an early influence. They likewise captured the imaginations of a wave of Scandinavian heavy-music fans that developed the early black-metal scene — the subgenre’s chosen moniker being pulled from Venom’s album of the same name. Cronos’ extreme, uncaged and “wild” stage banter became legendary in its own right, with a New Jersey performance having been bootlegged by a Black Flag roadie in 1986. The recording was later sampled on a Beastie Boys record. More recently, Venom’s influence was spotlighted this year when Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath collaborated with Behemoth on a cover of “In League with Satan.” Cronos had maintained Venom over the years through several lineup changes. They released 16 full-length albums, the last of which being 2026’s Into Oblivion. The group’s last performance with vocalist-bassist Cronos was this July at the Luppolo in Rock festival in Cremona, Italy. Revolver send our deepest condolences to Lant’s family, friends and fans.
