Clutch have a monster new track called “Wasted Lands,” and the groove kings’ latest track happens to be the title track to their long-in-the-works, heavily-anticipated fourteenth album. The former is streaming now, while the latter lands in full next year. The cut is Clutch’s second in a month, following late August comeback track “The Drifter Returns.” It’s a fueled-up-and-fiery mid-pace rocker, brawny riffs battering beneath Neil Fallon’s tale about a “creature of malice” named…Neil Patrick Fallon! He explains in a press release that the “no good, double-dealing, fork-tongued” figure at the heart of the song — reportedly scarier than anything conjured up by H.P. Lovecraft or Stephen King — goofs on a real-life situation where a fan thought Fallon was ripping them off in an online transaction. “The inspiration for the lyrics in ‘Wasted Lands’ came about when it was brought to my attention that someone had been dragging my name on Facebook,” he explains in a statement. “Apparently, I had reneged on a free t-shirt and dinner. I think it was a prize in a pay to play contest. Not to overstate the obvious, but it was a load of horse hockey. “Many people tried to explain to this person that it was not me and that they had been hustled. But they simply would not believe it. So I thought, screw it, no half-measures. You want a monster? Let’s give you one.” You can see Clutch get up to some beastly business via the video up above. The band add that Wasted Lands‘ other songs concern “exploded monuments, haunted coal towns, robber barons, time cops, a chestburster, fifteen tons of antimatter,” and more. And they’re apparently all built to be blasted live. The band add in a joint statement: “Wasted Lands came from one clear intention: write a great rock record that will make fans go nuts when they hear these songs live, while leaving enough space in the creative process to follow the unexpected turns that keep Clutch exciting to us and our fans after thirty-five years together.” Wasted Lands is due out January 22, 2027 via the band’s own Weathermaker Music. Pre-orders for the vinyl, CD and cassette editions are already up in Revolver’s shop, where you can likewise find other key Clutch releases. As previously reported, Clutch begin a 17-show headline tour October 16th at the Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina. They’ll be joined by openers Slomosa and Blood Vulture. It’s finally happened: Clutch have returned with new music. After years of teasing a follow-up to 2022’s Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, the Maryland groove kings have hit back with their first new song in nearly four years. The comeback cut has been given the on-the-nose title of “The Drifter Returns.” Clutch get punchy from the jump, leaning into a percussive give-and-take between thick-and-meaty pull-off riffs and Neal Fallon’s gruffly melodic witticisms on faith, “ontological shock treatment” and living for the moment (“Today is all we’ve got / I speak the truth, why would I lie?”). As previously reported, Clutch have been grinding their gears on new music for a few years. Fallon had previously confirmed with Metal Hammer last December that the band had logged a few songwriting sessions in 2025, and that they’d be recording sometime in 2026. It’s as-yet unclear if the band have completed the full-length, or when exactly “The Drifter Returns” was record (or by whom). Nevertheless, Clutch have at least thrown themselves into first gear for their next phase. You can sample the action via the lyric video up above. Clutch are due to start a 17-show headline tour October 16th at the Fillmore in Charlotte, North Carolina. They’ll be joined by support acts Slomosa and Blood Vulture. Info on the rest of the trip can be found here. In related news, Mastodon’s Marrow Deep album was released today (August 28th). Fallon appear on the album’s final track, “The Three Fates.” He’d previously tracked a legendary guest spot on Mastodon’s “Blood and Thunder” song from 2004 LP Leviathan.
