Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill has announced he’s retiring after 56 years, citing “evil arthritis” as the key reason for departing the legendary metal band. Described by the band as “the backbone of Judas Priest,” Hill joined the group in 1970 and has performed on all nineteen of Priest’s studio albums — from 1970’s Rocka Rolla to 2024’s Invincible Shield. Today (October 9th), he revealed his departure in a statement, explaining that he’s been battling advanced arthritis and body pain for years, and he’s decided to give himself a well-earned rest. “For a long time now, when asked ‘How long can you continue’ — I’ve always answered, ‘Until my performances suffer’…I hate to say it, but that time has come. “For some years now, I’ve been struggling with the onset of the evil arthritis, which is now in an advanced state in my left shoulder and right hand, established in my right shoulder, and present in both knees. I’ve been fighting this with painkilling pills, gels, and recently with cortisone injections in my shoulder and hand. He went on to explain that while he was able to lay his bass lines down for Invincible Shield, he was unsure whether he could perform on tour. The band had asked Uriah Heep rhythm-stringer Davey Rimmer to learn their set in case they needed an extra hand on-stage. Rimmer came through in the clutch when Hill wasn’t able to perform with the band last month at the Eventim Apollo in London, England. “This was due to me snapping a tendon in my left shoulder (as if I didn’t have enough problems with it!) just before the encores during the Brussels show two days before,” Hill continued. “This led to me not being able to lift my arm enough to reach the neck of my bass. So, we had to call Davey to stand in for me, who put in an incredible performance at such short notice!” Rimmer is now being instated as Priest’s full-time bassist. Of Hill’s exit, the rest of the group noted: “He has been the backbone of Judas Priest for so long and will be greatly missed by us all. We wish him well in his retirement and welcome Davey into the Priest Family.” Judas Priest’s next scheduled live date is a summer 2027 appearance at Oslo, Norway’s Tons of Rock festival. Heavy metal legends Judas Priest have announced that founding member and bassist Ian Hill will retire from the band due to arthritis and other health issues. Ian Hill will be replaced by Davey Rimmer of Uriah Heep. Rimmer has already recently filled in for Hill at the band's London show last month.
