“He said, ‘Do you remember me saving your life?’ I was like, ‘No?’”
A horror influencer and musician, Brocarde is known for her explorations of the paranormal, from haunted locations to notorious true-crime cases. She released her debut album, Good Attendance at Sunday School, this past June, and the music video for “Blank Pages” today. For a Halloween lover like myself, it doesn’t get more exciting than being given the opportunity to walk the blood-red carpet at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. I was fortunate to be invited to Los Angeles not only to attend opening night but to spend a week with Universal, getting the VIP treatment and experiencing exclusive tours of some of the mazes before they opened to the public. Before I even arrived in Hollywood, it felt obvious to me that, with the launch of his new scare maze, Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne was going to be the man of the moment, but even a metalhead like me underestimated the outpouring of love he has received from horror fans. The past few days have seen wait times for his maze hit the four-hour mark, with many spending their whole evening in line waiting for the Ozzy experience, and I can promise you that it does not disappoint! When I was on the red carpet, I noticed that Sharon Osbourne was visibly emotional. She held Ozzy’s hand on his effigy and, when asked if she thinks Ozzy is looking down on us smiling, she said, “I do, absolutely. He’s probably in there!” She pointed towards the theme park. “He’d be so happy. He’s having a great time just watching us right now. He’d be so happy about it.” For me, the thought of Ozzy Osbourne haunting his own scare maze is so perfectly on-brand for the theatrical performer. The maze is an amazing personification of Ozzy’s life, starting in childhood and journeying through his entire career. The spirit of Ozzy has been captured to the finest detail, so it’s easy to imagine why he’d want to be in there! It brings a whole new layer of excitement, feeling like the ghost of Ozzy may be present to give you a jump scare. Earlier this week, I got an exclusive lights-on tour of the maze from Universal Studios Creative Director John Murdy, and he revealed that the maze has been in production for over a year. John and the creative team at Universal took great care to honor Ozzy’s legacy perfectly. He had fortnightly calls with Sharon to update her on every step of the creative process. View this post on Instagram John Murdy also shared personal stories of how, years earlier, Ozzy had come to Universal Studios to do a walkthrough of the Black Sabbath maze: “He embraced the moment and was even grabbing scare actors and licking the blood off their necks like a true showman.” Even back then, Ozzy fever had hit Universal Studios — fans were chanting Ozzy’s name — so John felt the need to get him off-site ASAP. Ozzy’s driver sped off at breakneck speed, then the car came to a grinding halt. Ozzy ushered John over and said, “But I didn’t get to say thank you.” A moment in the chaos that captured the true heart of Ozzy and cemented a friendship between him and John that grew out of mutual respect. My lights-on tour really allowed time for me to hear those personal stories, and it showcased the maze in a new light. Honestly, the maze is phenomenal — the passion and attention to detail are amazing. The maze starts by taking you back to where it all began, Ozzy’s youth as a Blitz kid. You’ll find a train station amongst the WWII rubble. Inside, you’ll find a few interesting characters waiting at Platform 666. Then you’ll board the Crazy Train, naturally, and the madness continues. Before a trip to the Osbournes’ Asylum, where you hit the Werewolf era, this is where you’ll find Ozzy’s throne. It’s an exact replication of the throne he sat on during his last-ever concert at Villa Park. The original is displayed in Birmingham, but Sharon sent John exact measurements and a series of images to create an authentic replica. A dragon emerges from the bottom of the throne. This is actually a 3D animatronic based on Ozzy’s tattoo. In a strange twist of fate, the finale sees a huge bat biting off Ozzy’s head — a stroke of genius! Then you exit the maze to the song ‘See You on the Other Side,” which was personally chosen by Sharon. View this post on Instagram The maze was an almost-ethereal experience and so moving; you could feel the love that the creative team had poured into capturing Ozzy in all of his wonderful madness. In the cold light of day, with no jump scares or scare actors, it felt like the Church of Ozzy — a place to come to pay your respects. It almost conjured a tear. I was eager to find out how Sharon felt about Ozzy’s head being bitten off by a bat. Her answer was: “There’s lots of bats, everywhere, always.” Sharon was there on opening night to experience her first-ever walkthrough of the maze, but she admitted that she’s a scaredy-cat. “I’m a wuss. When it comes to anything like this, I’m such a wuss.” I couldn’t help but wonder how it must feel to experience The Prince of Darkness maze as Ozzy’s wife and lifelong partner. If I, as a virtual stranger, was so moved, how many emotions must have been running through Sharon’s head that evening? The scare maze actors are visual representations of Ozzy throughout the years, and she would have recognized him in each era. I kept coming back to the same answer: This is what Ozzy would have wanted, and he would have loved it, so she’s continuing her lifelong mission to keep celebrating his amazing legacy.
