Let’s go! The new ‘Knot have just ripped us a new one. Slipknot have just delivered surprise single, the raging “Arsenal.” It’s the band’s first release with drummer Eloy Casagrande, who joined in 2024, and likewise their first song to be released since the departure of longtime turntablist Sid Wilson earlier this summer. It may feature the as-yet-unidentified, masked percussionist who has been touring with the band since 2023. And it arrives three years on from the band’s last single, 2023’s stand-alone slow-burner “Bone Church.” Revolving around the screamed hook of “Let’s go!” from vocalist Corey Taylor, “Arsenal” features all the elements of classic Slipknot: skin-flaying riffery, keg pounding, DJ scratching, and plenty of hyper-speed drumming from Casagrande. The accompanying surreal music video — directed by M Shawn “clown” Crahan and starring Jackson White — teases what appear to monstrous new masks and even some papal robes. Slipknot first let it slip that they were working on new music with Casagrande back in the spring of 2024, when the then-just-revealed drummer told the press that he was working out the internal and aesthetic dynamics within the group. In that process, they began crafting a song titled — at least at the time — “Long May You Die.” It’s unclear at present if “Arsenal” is a completely different cut, or an outgrowth of that rumored composition. “I think that was also part of the audition, they threw new ideas at me to see what my songwriting was like,” he told Kerrang two years ago. “They wanted to test me in every way.” At this point, with several tours with the ‘Knot now behind him, it’s clear that Casagrande made the grade. You’ll find his formal studio debut with the band streaming via the player up above. While Slipknot released their near-mythical offshoot album as Look Outside Your Window earlier this year — which included experimental songs written and recorded during the sessions for 2008’s All Hope Is Gone — the group’s last proper studio LP was 2022’s The End, So Far.
