"Music has been my life and I’ve been very lucky to share this journey with many amazing people and fans"
Big day for one of heavy metal's founding fathers.
A rather melancholic offering with a guitar solo that cries rather than wails.
There’s a storm-a-brewin’, but be not afraid — Black Sabbath‘s Tony Iommi is back with another single from his mega-anticipated solo album, From the Dark. The doom-stirring metal god advances the campaign today (September 30th) with the unveiling of the record’s latest single, the epically chugging “Stormwatcher.” The track follows July’s “World Alone” single, and ripples the high seas with a judding heaviness, wah-wah-warbling typhoons of old-school shreddery and a dramatic, metal-operatic vocal turn from key From the Dark collaborator Jorn Lande. The Norwegian frontman, who co-wrote the album with Iommi, sings of a troubled soul “confined to [his] quarters of shadows,” yet whom pushes forward to battle personal demons and find “blue horizons.” A press release further explains that the metal anthem is “a powerful story about struggles and sorrow as life voyages from birth to death, and beyond.” “It channels something from within, something real,” Lande continues. “We are the captain of our own vessel, a ship crashing through unknown and sometimes challenging waters, always navigating forward, steering steady through every storm, driven by dreams of new horizons and longing for something new.” An animated video starring a shipwrecked soul traveling the “waves of destiny” on a lifeboat with a bunch of verminous stowaways can be seen above. Without spoiling too much, it features a cartoonishly harrowing confrontation between a malicious, cannon-firing vessel and a vengeful Voltron-ing river rat. As previously reported, From the Dark is Iommi’s first solo album since 2005’s Fused. He co-produced the album with Mike Exeter. Lande took charge of the lyrics, which are “full of dystopian imagery and ruminations on the fleeting nature of the human experience.” Other musicians involved with the project include Mercyful Fate bassist Becky Baldwin and English drummer Karl Brazil. From the Dark sees releaser October 23rd via BMG. A deluxe CD edition and a double LP pressing on “white and black marble” vinyl (limited to 1,000) are up for pre-order in Revolver‘s shop, where you’ll likewise find a 7-inch copy of “World Alone,” Black Sabbath records and more.
