Metallica’s residency at the Las Vegas Sphere continues with another epic set – including a song they haven’t played in almost 20 years
The first of over twenty shows.
Metallica roamed into Nevada last night to begin their much-anticipated “Life Burns Faster” residency at the immersive Sphere venue in Las Vegas. Surrounded by massive screens and a bunch of fans, the metal icons delivered a set of favorites and a few surprises. The 16-song set began with classic thrash-beater “Battery,” and it’s the first time they kicked off a set with the Master of Puppets song since the summer of 2014. The night also brought out fan-favorites like “Creeping Death,” “Sad but True” and “Master of Puppets” (the latter having closed out the night), and ran the gamut from Kill ‘Em All’s “Seek & Destroy” up to 72 Seasons’ “Lux Æterna.” ‘Tallica also took “…And Justice for All” to the stage for the first time since 2014, while Hardwired…to Self-Destruct’s “Now That We’re Dead” made its way back into the set after a five-year absence. The evening also had the members of Metallica paying tribute to late bassist Cliff Burton ahead of their performance of epic Ride the Lightning instrumental “The Call of Ktulu,” which found a massive, tentacled Cthulhu slowly prowling the Sphere’s wraparound screen. Last weekend marked the 40th anniversary of Burton’s passing, following a tragic tour bus accident in Sweden. Per fan and official footage, the visuals ripping across the screens throughout the night also included great strikes of lightning, cathedral settings, Pushead skulls, and more. You’ll find scenes from ‘Tallica’s first Sphere show above and below. The setlist for the night can be found below, too (via setlist.fm). Metallica are playing 24 sold-out shows at the Sphere between October and March. The next takes place tomorrow (October 3rd). Per the rules of their “No Repeats Weekend” format, odds are good it’ll be a fresh set of songs on Saturday. Metallica also resume their “M72” world tour in November with a pair of shows at Uncasville, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena, and have a run of North American dates with Limp Bizkit starting at Vancouver, BC’s BC Place on May 8th.
