'Heavy Metal's Big Four: How Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, And Megadeth Reshaped Metal' Book Due In NovemberIt seems strange now, but thrash metal was the least likely genre to break big — the speed, aggression, and DIY ethos ran counter to every prevailing rock trend. Yet four bands — METALLICA, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX and SLAYER — rewrote the rules of heavy music and reshaped the sound of metal. In "Heavy Met...

Fan poll: Top 5 CLIFF BURTON-era METALLICA songsCliff Burton. That says it all, doesn’t it? A true icon of heavy metal, the late Metallica bassist was praised in life and death as a four-string innovator. He had a knack for melody, plus an ear for the intense — as evidenced by his propensity for pushing his tone with reckless wah and fuzz effects. The lines Burton laid down for his trio of albums with Metallica — 1983’s Kill ‘Em All, 1984’s Ride the Lightning and 1986’s Master of Puppets — remain influential. Hell, even some of the ones he initially forged with teen band Agents of Misfortune continue to rock arenas to this day (see “For Whom the Bell Tolls”). With the fall of 2026 marking 40 years since Burton’s tragic and untimely passing following a bus crash in Sweden, we asked our readers to weigh in on the greatest ‘Tallica tracks during his tenure. Here’s how they rode. “Disposable Heroes” Naturally, a lot of early ‘Tallica tracks got spotlighted in out comments section this week. By far the speediest song to crack the top five, “Disposable Heroes” is the back of the front, if you will. The anti-war song explodes across eight epic minutes, moving from gun-turret precision-picking towards fast-thrashed sections and beyond. Hardly disposable, it’s an essential part of Master of Puppets. We will do what the fans say when they say, and they said to put this one in at No. 5. “(Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth” “Bass solo, take one.” While Burton had a hand in writing several classic early tracks, there’s perhaps no purer distillation of the metal icon’s being than “(Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth.” The mostly-solo piece hones a magnetic lead-bass style, Burton presenting both a neo-classical attention to melody and a fierce spirit through triplet arpeggiation and wah-blasted accents that cry like a cat in heat. He yanks drummer Lars Ulrich into the piece midway through for a rumbling finale of fuzz and fretboard finesse. “Creeping Death” So let it be written — time and time again, to be honest — Revolver readers love the hell out of “Creeping Death.” Ride the Lightning’s lone single warns of a great plague claiming countless lives across ancient lands. The thing is, fans aren’t heeding to Hetfield’s words in fear, they’re delighting in the chaos. Between its battering pace and arena-conquering gang chants, can you really blame them? “Creeping Death” has been a mainstay of Metallica’s setlist for decades, and stands as one of the group’s most-performed songs ever (second to only “Master of Puppets”). We’ve already crossed the 40-year mark; here’s hoping they play it for another 400. “The Call of Ktulu” Ride the Lightning’s instrumental epic closes ‘Tallica’s sophomore album with a great sense of unease. The bone-chilling creepiness of the lead melody disturbs, whether cleanly-picked or loudly crunched. Burton goes full gonzo with his four-stringin’, taking the lead up from with a derelict set of hammer-ons, accentuated by a tone-freaking wah pedal and a full head of fuzz. Fitting for a song named — albeit misspelled — after one of H.P. Lovecraft’s most horrific creations, “The Call of Ktulu” is a towering, imposing and fully hypnotizing beast of a song. “Orion” You ever just gaze at the midnight stars with “Orion” cranked high in your headphones? Master of Puppets’ penultimate, instrumental eight-minute voyage has instilled wonder in metalheads for 40 years, standing as one of their most melodically transcendent, planes-crossing listening experiences. Primarily composed by Burton, “Orion” fades in with a dramatic, almost organ-like haze of distorted bass and minors-driven, high-tension chunkiness. It’s got solos from guitarists Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, though Burton’s cosmos-waltzing mid-section of fluid finger playing may steal the show as its most hummable moment. While Master of Puppets is a classic, through and through, we know that “Orion,” in particular, is a song that fans will never space on.
