Anthrax are avowed comics fans, through and through, with the iconic thrash outfit having penned songs about Judge Dredd and scribed their own Lobo books for D.C. Now, the Big 4 band are set to tell their own story in an upcoming graphic novel.A press release says that the newly-announced NOT: The Illustrated Oral History of Anthrax is set to explore more than 40 years of the band’s history, detailing “unforgettable moments, onstage triumphs, backstage chaos, and enduring legacy in sequential form.” Expected highlights include their rise through the metal scene, befriending fellow future legends in Metallica and Pantera, their classic Public Enemy collaboration, their infamous appearance on Married… With Children, and more.Their story will be paired with visuals from a number of comics veterans, including Brian Bolland (Judge Dredd), Peter Bagge (Hate) Jay Howell (Bob’s Burgers) Danny Hellman (Legal Action Comics), Sean Pryor (The Illustrated Al), Erik Rodriguez (Hispanic Batman), Brent Engstrom (Garbage Pail Kids) and more. “Being a band for 40+ years you have stories, you have experiences, and the way we’re telling the stories and experiences with Z2 is a great way for us and the fans to actually visualize these little stories in comic book form,” says drummer Charlie Benante.He adds: “I think once people see it, they’ll get a laugh out of it because these stories are true! Nothing is fabricated here. I think you’re gonna enjoy these stories, these great artists, and this new collaboration between Anthrax and Z2!”The upcoming book is the follow-up to Anthrax’s previous partnership with Z2, an illustrated retelling of their 1987 album Among the Living (which can be purchased in Revolver’s shop).NOT: The Illustrated Oral History of Anthrax is set to be released March 16th, 2027. Here at Revolver, we’re always on the hunt for new songs to bang our heads to — indeed, it’s a big part of our jobs. With that in mind, here are the tracks released this week in Viking metal, deathcore, hardcore and more that have been on heavy rotation at Revolver HQ. For your listening pleasure, we’ve also compiled the songs in an ever-evolving Spotify playlist. Amon Amarth – “Upphaf” Gather round and let Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg growl you a tale of Gods and the giants of yore. This week’s “Upphaf” is the first-ever all-acoustic song from the Viking-metal veterans, scaling back the Valhalla-shaking distortion of their classic sound. The band’s unplugged number plays out as a campfire epic, resplendent in chiming unplugged guitar tones and nine-realms-crossing storytelling. Anthrax – “The Edge of Perfection” Scott Ian calls Anthrax’s second Cursum Perficio single the best song they’ve ever written. That’s a loaded statement, considering the East Coast icons helped shaped the sound of metal as we know it over the past 40 years — their catalog sports some of the genre’s most revered, riff-heavy anthems ever. What we’ll say is this: The song indeed rips. It’s a wildly inspired arrangement that involves elements of blackened melancholy, paranoid arpeggiating, gate-crashing blasts from Charlie Benate, a wildly singable shred solo, and a passionate vocal performance from Joey Belladonna. Simply masterful. Devil Master – “You Worms’ Vain Delusions” Just in time for a sweltering summer, metal scoundrels Devil Master increase the heat with this scorching taste of their upcoming album, Bloody Dreams — a feat that threatens to turn their corpse paint into melting schmears of Philly cream cheese. Piercingly punky one-two beats and blackened trills are the backbone of the madness, while awesomely-named vocalist-bassist Disembody Through Unparalleled Pleasure ups the ante with menacing groans about humans writhing eternally in a pile of creepy crawlers. A spikes-and-leather-framed Bosch painting come to life, hellacious to the max. HANABIE. – “Life Is Short, O Brave Girl” Life is short, so why not spend some more time with HANABIE. while you can? The Japanese hybridists bring together a high-protein beatdown of nu-thuggin’ riffs, hyper-speed J-pop, electronic swerves and more. Yukina delivers destructive growls and nervy yelps while bassist Hettsu sweetens things up with her melodious positivisms (“Let’s play the game”). The wrestling angle of the vid finds the quartet flubbing a Rocky-style exercise montage, at least until their coach slings them a mysteriously powers-inducing jug of juice. They then lay the smackdown on a masked baddie and claim the belt as “Harajuku-core” heavyweights. Initiate – “Numb to the Pain” We’re anything but numb to the soul-stirring hardcore groove Initiate affixed to their first single in nearly a year and a half, though we admit that the song stunned us in our tracks the first time we cranked it up. “Numb the Pain” strikes deep to the core, whether bounding through natural harmonic-spiked heaviness or soothing, sea-green melodicism. Vocalist Crystal Pak seeks inner peace, excising her intrusive thoughts with a cathartic scream. It all makes for an energetic endorphin rush that’s got us eagerly awaiting their forthcoming With Love // With Rage EP for new label home Blue Grape Music. To the Grave – “Nail Mary” “Thou shalt not kill anymore.” Australian Vegan deathcore outfit To the Grave are storming cathedrals and slaughterhouses with the savage sounds of their “Nail Mary,” a no-punches-pulled attack of virulent drums, razor-lined riffs and lyrics that take aim at religious practices that come at the cost of the animals. A grave yet super-sick statement of intent from their forthcoming, activism-minded LIBERATION FRONT LP.

East Coast thrash legends Anthrax have revealed the latest magic trick off their forthcoming Cursum Perficio, a blast-pounded epic called “The Edge of Perfection.” The new song is the second single behind Cursum Perficio, following this spring’s thrash-manic “It’s for the Kids.” “The Edge of Perfection” is a different kind of beast, a near-seven-minute rollercoaster that spirals through a shimmering guitar intro before ramping up into a blast-and-trilled section of blackened melancholy, then onto power-swung gravitas. Guitarist Scott Ian calls it “the apex predator of Anthrax songs,” and likewise “the best song we’ve ever written and the best thing I’ve ever been a part of creatively.” Drummer Charlie Benate feels it’s of the same tier as classic Anthrax tracks like “Only” and “Indians.” Lyrically, the song seems to concern feelings of love, regret, change, desperation and more, and having all of that swirl inside your head at the same time (“Self-aware to the point of obliteration”). “What’s the most powerful emotion that moves me more than anything? Of course, it’s love,” Ian says with respect to the theme. “Nothing moves me like the deep feeling that I get from my wife and son. I’m living on that edge for the rest of my life. This is mine, but there are a lot of ways to ruin it. I’ve ruined it in past iterations of my life, but it got me to where I am. Love is perfection, and I like being on the edge of it. I don’t want everything to be about all of the same shit. This record has a whole bunch of love, a whole bunch of fun, and a little hate.” The music video, conceived and directed by Joel Harlow (Star Trek, Alice in Wonderland) finds a man haunted by demons — a crew that look part Cenobite and part Babadook-esque paralysis specter. He takes a date to a magic show, this referencing the cover art to Cursum Perficio, and things take a turn for the weird. In addition to the performance footage of Anthrax, the video stars martial artist Wes Scarpias, Ashley Edner-Tancharoen, Troy James, Rod Maxwell, Fedor Steer and special effects legend Rick Baker as the magician. As previously reported, the 11-song Cursum Perficio appears in full September 26th via Megaforce. The album was produced by Anthrax and Jay Ruston, and was recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles, California. You can pre-order CD and vinyl copies in Revolver’s shop. Anthrax also have a North American summer tour on deck with Iron Maiden and Megadeth, which begins August 29th at Toronto, Ontario’s Rogers Centre.
